The Yankees were able to snap their four game losing streak on Wednesday as they defeated the Baltimore Orioles 12-3 and avoided the sweep.
Phil Hughes was solid in his performance today for the Yankees. Hughes allowed 1 run on 9 hits in 6 innings of work. He struck out 2 and walked 2. He finished his outing with 107 pitches thrown, in which 70 of them were for strikes.
Joba Chamberlain made his first appearance today since last June. Chamberlain didn't look as sharp as he hoped, but everyone gave him a break. It was his first time pitching against big league hitters in over a year. Chamberlain allowed 2 runs on 4 hits in 1 2/3 innings pitched. He didn't strike anybody out, but he did walk one. He threw 28 pitches, 16 of them were strikes.
The Yankee offense exploded today against Orioles starter Zach Britton. The bombers scored 7 runs against him and issued him the early departure. Robinson Cano highlighted the afternoon with his grand slam in the third inning. Derek Jeter came out swinging today as well. Jeter picked up three hits in four at bats and drove in three runs.
The newly acquired Casey McGehee didn't pick up a hit in his two official at bats, but he scored twice and drove in one. He also worked two walks. McGehee drove in Robinson Cano with his sacrifice fly to center field in the eighth inning.
Ichiro Suzuki extended his hit streak to 9 games with his infield single to third in the fourth inning. Ichiro has hit safely in all 9 games that he has been with the Yankees.
The Yankees will enjoy an off day tomorrow and will begin a three game set with the Mariners on Friday.
