The Yankees were able to beat the Tigers on Wednesday 4-3 after a controversial call by third base umpire, Tim Welke, which forced the game to be played under protest.

Hiroki Kuroda started for the Yankees and he had another solid outing. Kuroda allowed 3 runs on 10 hits in 6 1/3 innings of work. He struck out 5 and did not walk a batter. He exited after throwing 102 pitches, in which 65 of them were for strikes.

The Yankee offense was able to come through late as they were down 3-2 going into the eighth inning. With one out and no one on, Mark Teixeira cranked a solo shot to right field to tie the game. On the very next pitch, red-hot Eric Chavez belted an opposite field solo shot to left field to give the Yankees the lead late.

David Phelps was chosen to work the eighth inning and he worked 2/3 of the inning and was able to retire Miguel Cabrera and Austin Jackson. Prince Fielder reached on a single after Cabrera's fly out and advanced to second via the balk.

Rafael Soriano entered the game in the eighth inning with two outs to secure the four out save, and he did just that. Soriano picked up his 27th save on the season.

The Yankees will travel to Toronto and start a three game set with the Blue Jays.
