The Yankees were unable to stop the Tigers on Saturday as they lost 6-4 in twelve innings. Raul Ibanez came up clutch again tonight when he launched a two-run shot to tie the game at four in the ninth inning. Derek Jerer exited in the twelfth inning with a fractured left ankle. Joe Girardi said in a postgame press conference that Jeter will be done for the season and the recovery time is 3 months.

Andy Pettitte started for the Yankees and he was outstanding. Pettitte allowed 2 runs on 7 hits in 6 2/3 innings of work. He struck out 5 and walked 3 batters. Pettitte finished his outing with 107 pitches, in which 71 of them were for strikes.

The Yankee offense seemed to get off to a good start as the loaded the bases twice in the first two innings. The opportunities were there for the Yankees, but they were unable to score as they left the bases loaded. The Yankees would load the bases for the third time in the sixth inning, but struck out two times to end the inning.

Down four while going into the ninth inning, Ichiro Suzuki belted a two-run shot to right field to cut their deficit to 4-2. After a strikeout to Cano, and a walk to Mark Teixeira, Raul Ibanez would step to the plate. Ibanez would drill a home run to right field to tie the game up at 4.

The Yankee bullpen pitched well tonight, but David Phelps took the loss. Phelps allowed 2 runs on 3 hits in 1 inning of work. He struck out 1 and walked 1.

The Yankees and Tigers will play Game 2 tomorrow afternoon.
