Tonight was a start that Phil Hughes does not want to remember as he couldn't even escape the first inning in the 12-2 blowout by the Mariners. He retired the leadoff batter on just two pitches, but it then took him 32 pitches to record the second out in the inning. Hughes gave up seven runs in the first inning before being pulled by manager Joe Girardi.

Hughes allowed seven runs on six hits in two thirds of an inning pitched. He issued two walks and did not record a strikeout. He threw 36 pitches, in which 23 of them were for strikes. The big blow in the inning was the grand slam by former Yankee, Raul Ibanez.

Preston Claiborne and Brett Marshall both pitched in relief tonight. Marshall allowed five runs and threw 108 pitches out of the bullpen.

Infielder Alberto Gonzalez pitched the ninth inning and recorded the final out in an effort to preserve a pitcher out of the bullpen.

Vernon Wells and Chris Stewart accounted for the Yankees only runs tonight as they both hit solo shots.

The Yankees and Mariners will conclude their three game series tomorrow night.

After being down 3-1 through the first six innings against Felix Hernandez, the Yankees fortune turned as Hernandez didn't come back out to pitch the seventh inning. With that being said, the Yankees scored three runs in the seventh inning off of the Mariners bullpen, which led them to a 4-3 comeback win in the opener of their three game series. C.C. Sabathia picked up a no decision tonight, as well as Felix Hernandez. Both pitches failed to go more than seven innings and it turned out to be a battle of the bullpens in the late innings.

Sabathia allowed three runs, two of them earned, in six and a third innings of work. He struck out ten and walked only two. His pitched count was elevated and he finished his outing with 112 pitches thrown, in which 75 of them were for strikes.

Robinson Cano proved to be the difference in the game tonight. Trailing by two runs with one out in the seventh inning, Cano doubled off the right-center field wall to tie the game at three. He would later come around to score on the game-winning sacrifice fly by Lyle Overbay.

The Yankee bullpen was perfect again tonight and did not allow a run or a hit.

Mariano Rivera picked up his 16th save in as many opportunities to seal the win.

The Yankees and Mariners will be back at it tomorrow night to play the middle game of their three game series.
