Robinson Cano participates in the 2012 Home Run Derby. |
Kansas City Royals fans were upset that Robinson Cano didn't pick the hometown favorite, Billy Butler, to participate in the Home Run Derby. As a result, Cano was relentlessly booed during pre-game ceremonies and while he was at bat. After every out that he would record, the fans would get louder and louder, which led to a no Home Run performance by Cano.
At one point, Cano had to take a break from swinging to go talk to some of the players to calm him down. Teammates Curtis Granderson and C.C. Sabathia walked out to the mound to calm Cano's father down as well.
The fans in attendance tonight went way to far just because their hometown favorite didn't get selected into the Home Run Derby. The act that they showed tonight to their team captain was uncalled for.
Now let me say this. Kansas City has hosted a great week so far regarding all of the All-Star festivities. Not just the Home Run Derby, but the week building up to it has been greatly done. This week has been a terrific showcase for their city, which hasn't hosted an All-Star Game in 27 years.
The Home Run Derby raised $615,000, including $440,000 for the Boys and Girls Club of America.
It was just sad to see that negativity seeped into Kauffman Stadium to disrupt a good event.
