A game full of twists and turns ended in the Yankees' favor on Tuesday night as they defeated the Baltimore Orioles in 12 innings. Freddy Garcia started the night and lasted only 4 1/2 innings. He gave up 4 R, 3 of them earned, on 4 hits. He was later relived by David Phelps, who is quickly impressing the coaching staff. Phelps struck out 4 batters over 2 1/3 innings of work while allowing no hits.
The Yankees' trailed 4-1 going into the 6th inning until the they plated 3 runs. With a Robinson Cano single and an Alex Rodriguez fly out, Mark Teixeira added with a single of his own. Curtis Granderson walked to load the bases and Andruw Jones hit a sacrifice fly to cut the lead to 4-2. The next batter was Russell Martin who hit a sharp ground ball to 3rd that Mark Reynolds blocked with his chest, but was unable to get the out at first; therefore Mark Teixeira scored cutting the O's lead to 4-3. Brett Gardner was next who quickly singled to right to plate Curtis Granderson and the score was tied at 4.
Nobody would score until the 12th inning, when Raul Ibanez was tested by Pedro Strop and the Orioles. Ibanez would hit a RBI ground rule double to give the Yankees' the 5-4 lead late.
That hit would prove to be enough as Mariano Rivera came in and notched his first save of the 2012 campaign.
The Yankees' were 1-14 with runners in scoring position tonight.
