Yankees acquire Alfonso Soriano from Cubs

The Yankees have released the following statement after acquiring outfielder Alfonso Soriano from the Cubs for minor league Corey Black.

The New York Yankees today announced they acquired outfielder Alfonso Soriano and cash consideration from the Chicago Cubs in exchange for minor league right-handed pitcher Corey Black.

Soriano, 37, hit .254 (92-for-362) with 47 runs, 24 doubles, 17 home runs and 51 RBI in 93 games with the Cubs in 2013. He owns a .272 (1,989-for-7,305) career batting average with 1,093 runs, 458 doubles, 31 triples, 389 home runs and 1,086 RBI in 1,850 games over 15 Major League seasons with the Yankees (1999-2003), Texas Rangers (2004-05), Washington Nationals (2006) and Chicago Cubs (2007-13). His 54 career leadoff home runs trail only Rickey Henderson (81) for most in Major League history.

The San Pedro de Macoris, D.R., native was named to the All-Star team in seven consecutive seasons, playing for the American League from 2002-05 and the National League from 2006-08. He has also earned the Silver Slugger Award four times, once with the Yankees (2002), twice with Texas (2004-05) and once with the Nationals (2006).
The Yankees hope Soriano will provide a spark to their offense and help them reach the playoffs.

Yankees place Derek Jeter (Quad) on disabled list

The Yankees have announced on Friday that they have placed Derek Jeter on the 15-day disabled list with a right quad strain.

Jeter injured his right quad in his first game back from his ankle injury on July 11th while running the bases.

Derek Jeter has already missed 91 games this season due to his broken right ankle. Jeter sat out the final three games before the All-Star break, hoping that his quad would heal. He underwent more tests on Friday, but they still showed a strain in his quad. He is eligible to be reinstated from the disabled list on July 27th.

Eduardo Nunez will take over as the Yankee shortstop until Jeter returns.

The Yankees were unable to go into the All-Star break on a high note as they were defeated 10-4 by the Twins on Sunday.

C.C. Sabathia allowed eight runs, three of them earned, on eight hits in four innings of work. He struck out five, but walked two. He finished his outing with 93 pitches thrown, in which 60 of them were for strikes.

The Yankee defense really ruined Sabathia's start as their miscues accounted for most of the Twins runs. The Yankees commited two official errors in the game today, but some defensive plays resulted as doubles instead of errors. The Yankees allowed the Twins to get two free doubles today as Robinson Cano and Vernon Wells had a miscommunication in the outfield. Ichiro Suzuki also misplayed a ball as it skipped right by him to his left.

The Yankees hope to enjoy the All-Star break and really make a push in the second half of the season.

The Yankees were unable to solve the Royals in the opener of their three-game set on Monday as they were defeated 5-1. Phil Hughes started for the Yankees and he exited after four innings due to rain. The Yankees only run came off of a Lyle Overbay pinch-hit solo shot in the seventh inning.

Adam Warren came into the game to replace Hughes and he did well. Preston Claiborne followed him and he struggled a bit as he allowed two runs. The Yankees have to be a bit relieved as they didn't have to burn out their bullpen in the opener of this three-game set.

The Yankee offense was silent tonight as they scored only one run on nine hits.

The Yankees and Royals will continue this three-game set tomorrow night.
