Report: Alex Rodriguez set to retire after return

A report by the New York Daily News suggests that Alex Rodriguez is set to return, then retire, to collect the remainder of his five-year, $114 million dollar contract.

An annymous source told NYDN that his plan is to begin rehab games, then say that he is unable to continue playing due to his serious hip injury. If Rodriguez retires due to his injured hip, then he will be able to collect the money left on his contract.

Rodriguez is currently being pursued by Major League Baseball as he is tied in with the Biogenesis steroid scandal. Major League Baseball is trying to suspended Alex Rodriguez for a minimum of 100 games for his connection to the scandal. There have been no reports on when and if Rodriguez will be suspended.

The Yankees will not be forced to pay the remainder of his contract because of an insurance plan that they have in place. The insurance plan covers up to 80 percent of his contract. If this does indeed happen, then the Yankees would have a lot more money to play around with, plus get Rodriguez out of a Yankee uniform, and baseball.

The Yankees rally fell just short tonight as they were defeat 8-5 by the Rangers. The Yankees cut the deficit to one twice, but the bullpen couldn't shut down the Rangers. Andy Pettitte started for the Yankees, but struggled again as he suffered the loss.

Pettitte allowed four runs, three earned, on six hits, in six innings of work. He struck out six and walked two. He finished his outing with 107 pitches thrown, in which 72 of them were for strikes.

The Yankees made it a one run game in the bottom of the sixth inning after they scored two runs to make it a 4-3 game. Joba Chamberlain entered the game in the seventh inning and gave those two runs back. The Yankees would answer in the bottom half of the seventh inning with two more runs to make it a 6-5 game.

The Rangers would pad their lead in the ninth inning with two runs to make it a 8-5 game.

The Yankees could not answer in the bottom half of the ninth inning as they were retired in order by Joe Nathan.

The Yankees and Rangers will conclude their three-game set tomorrow afternoon.

Mark Teixeira to undergo season ending surgery

And the season goes on for the Yankees.

Mark Teixeira announced today that he will indeed undergo season-ending surgery to repair a torn tendon sheath in his right wrist.

Teixeira said that he will have surgery on his right wrist sometime next week and he will be out for four-to-five months.

The doctors have told him that he should be back to one-hundred percent in six months.

This is just another stunning blow for the Yankees as the injuries keep on coming.

With two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, Ichiro Suzuki done something that he has only done one other time in his career: hit a walk-off home run. The only other time he hit a walk-off home run was against Mariano River, yes Mariano, in 2009. In the Yankees 4-3 win over the Rangers, the Yankees hit four solo home runs to defeat the Rangers. Hiroki Kuroda started for the Yankees and he faced fellow Japanese native, Yu Darvish.

Kuroda allowed three runs, two earned, on five hits in six and two third innings of work. He struck out six and walked one. He finished his outing with 99 pitches thrown, in which 65 of them were for strikes.

The Yankee offense came via the home run ball tonight as four Yankees went deep. Travis Hafner hit the first home run in the fourth inning to make it a 2-1 game. Brett Gardner would add a home run of his own in the fifth inning, which at the time made it a 3-2 game. The Yankees would tie the game at three in the sixth inning on a Jayson Nix solo home run. Neither team would score until the bottom half of the ninth inning when Ichiro Suzuki hit a line drive home run to right field to win the game.

Mariano Rivera picked up his first win tonight, which evened his record to 1-1 out of the bullpen.

The Yankees and Rangers will continue their three-game set tomorrow night.

With all of the old timers' watching, the Yankees were unable to defeat the Rays as they were defeated 3-1. The deciding play came in the seventh inning when James Loney roped a two-run single back up the middle off of Boone Logan. Ivan Nova pitched a spot start today and he was impressive.

Nova allowed three runs on seven hits in six and two thirds innings of work. He struck out seven and walked three. Nova could have escaped this outing with only one run allowed, but Boone Logan could not escape the jam. He finished his outing with 103 pitches thrown, in which 68 of them were for strikes.

Robinson Cano drove in the Yankees only run today with a sacrifice fly to left field, which scored Brett Gardner, in the bottom half of the second inning.

The Yankees will enjoy an off-day tomorrow and will begin a three-game set with the Rangers on Tuesday.

Vernon Wells comes through. With the bases loaded, two outs, and the game on the line in the seventh inning, Joe Girardi showed his faith in Vernon Wells, and it paid off. Wells, who is in an Ike Davis type slump, lined a three-run double to right center field to give the Yankees a 7-5 lead late. The bullpen would do their job and shut the door on the Rays.

C.C. Sabathia started for the Yankees and picked up the win as well. Sabathia was cruising along in the game before he gave up a grand-slam to Will Myers. He allowed five runs on six hits in seven innings of work. He struck out two and walked two. He finished his outing with 91 pitches, in which 57 of them were for strikes.

As stated above, Vernon Wells drove in three runs with his huge double. Zoilo Almonte continued his dazzling debut today with his three runs batted in. David Adams contributed today as well with one run batted in.

Mariano Rivera came on in the ninth inning and shut the door to earn his 26th save of the season.

The Yankees were able to defeat the Rays on Friday by a final score of 6-2 as Zoilo Almonte dazzled Yankee fans in his first major league start. Almonte collected three hits and blasted his first career home run. David Phelps was very strong tonight and he picked up his fifth win of the season.

Phelps allowed two runs on eight hits in five and two thirds innings of work. He struck out four and walked one. He concluded his outing with 102 pitches thrown, in which 61 of them were for strikes.

Many Yankee hitters drove in runs tonight, but the story has been Zoilo Almonte. Although he only drove in one run, he collected three hits and after his home run, he received a curtain call.

Mariano Rivera worked the ninth inning in a non-save opportunity and shut the door on the Rays to pick up the must needed victory.

The Yankees and Rays will play the third game of their four-game set tomorrow afternoon.

Yankees acquire Brent Lillibridge from Cubs

The Yankees were finally able to get back into the win column on Sunday with their 6-5 win over the Angels, which snapped their five-game losing streak. The Yankee exploded in the third inning with five runs. C.C. Sabathia did his job today with his outstanding start.

Sabathia allowed two runs on five hits in eight innings of work. He struck out six and walked three batters. Sabathia finished his outing with 107 pitches, in which 70 of them were for strikes.

The Yankee offense did their part in the third inning as they put a five spot up on the board. Travis Hafner hit a three-run shot to center field to make it a 3-0 Yankee lead. Lyle Overbay would then double in Vernon Wells after his single to make it 4-0. Jayson Nix would then later drive in Overbay with a single to left field.

The Yankees would tack on another run in the eighth inning when Vernon Wells hit a sacrifice fly to score Robinson Cano.

The game would get a little interesting in the ninth inning. The Angels would go on to score five runs and stand the tying and winning runs on base. Mariano Rivera struck out Albert Pujols to end the game.

The Yankees will enjoy a day off tomorrow before starting a two-game set with the Dodgers in New York.

With their losing streak at four-games coming into this game, the Yankees hoped to halt it right there. Unfortunately, David Phelps was unable to snap the losing streak as the Yankees lost 6-2 against the Angels on Saturday. Phelps suffered his fourth loss of the season tonight, although he didn't pitch that poorly.

Phelps allowed four runs on nine hits in six innings of work. He struck out two and walked two. Phelps finished his outing with 102 pitches, in which 65 of them were for strikes.

The Yankees got on the board in the third inning on the Brett Gardner RBI triple to right field, which made it a 1-1 game. Jayson Nix would then single one batter later to make it a 2-1 game.

The Angels would tie the game in the bottom half of the third inning, then go on to take the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning.

The Yankees look to avoid their second consecutive sweep tomorrow as they conclude their three-game set with the Angels.

The Yankees were unable to snap their three-game losing streak tonight as they were defeated 5-2 by the Angels. The Yankee offense struggled again tonight and could not back up starter Andy Pettitte. Pettitte defiantly gave them a chance to win, but with the slumping offense, the losing streak increases to four games.

Andy Pettitte allowed four runs on eleven hits in seven innings of work. He struck out four and walked only one. He finished his outing with 101 pitches thrown, in which 68 of them were for strikes.

David Adams provided the offense tonight for the Yankees with his two-run single in the fourth inning.

The Yankees hope to snap their four-game losing streak tomorrow against the Angels.

The Yankees had many opportunities to win this game, but they couldn't cash in on them. The Yankees had two players go 0-for-8 and one player go 0-for-7. They were 1-for-13 with runners in scoring position. Hiroki Kuroda gave them an outstanding start today, but the offense just would not score any runs. They eventually lost the game 3-2 in 18 innings to the Athletics, which capped off the sweep.

Hiroki Kuroda started for the Yankees and he was oustanding. Kuroda allowed two runs on two hits in eight innings of work. He struck out three and walked two. He finished his outing wit 103 pitches thrown, in which 63 of them were for strikes.

The Yankees scored first in the first inning as Robinson Cano belted a two-run shot to center field. They would not score again in the game.

The Yankee bullpen was excellent today, but due to the lack of offense, they were bound to give up a run. Mariano Rivera gave up a walk-off single to Nate Freiman in the 18th inning to send the Athletics home happy.

This is just a game that the Yankees hope to put behind them.

The Yankees will visit the Angels on Friday to begin a three-game series.
