Vernon Wells comes through. With the bases loaded, two outs, and the game on the line in the seventh inning, Joe Girardi showed his faith in Vernon Wells, and it paid off. Wells, who is in an Ike Davis type slump, lined a three-run double to right center field to give the Yankees a 7-5 lead late. The bullpen would do their job and shut the door on the Rays.

C.C. Sabathia started for the Yankees and picked up the win as well. Sabathia was cruising along in the game before he gave up a grand-slam to Will Myers. He allowed five runs on six hits in seven innings of work. He struck out two and walked two. He finished his outing with 91 pitches, in which 57 of them were for strikes.

As stated above, Vernon Wells drove in three runs with his huge double. Zoilo Almonte continued his dazzling debut today with his three runs batted in. David Adams contributed today as well with one run batted in.

Mariano Rivera came on in the ninth inning and shut the door to earn his 26th save of the season.
