The Yankees were able to hold off the Mets for the 2nd straight night as the won game 2 of this 3 game set 4-2. Phil Hughes was able to pick up his 2nd consecutive victory. Mark Teixeira powered the Yankees with his go-ahead two run shot to right field in the 7th inning. Curtis Granderson added with a solo shot to right in the 8th inning.
Phil Hughes allowed 2 runs on 6 hits in 6 1/3 innings pitched. He struck out 6 and walked 2. He threw 108 pitches, in which 71 of them were for strikes.
The Yankee offense was able to get on the board early. Alex Rodriguez laced a RBI single to center field in the 1st inning, scoring Jeter from second. Jeter opened the bottom half of the inning with a single to snap his 0-for-17 skid.
The Yankees had a couple of milestones during the game:
Alex Rodriguez tied Eddie Murray on the all-time RBI list with his 1,917th RBI in the first inning.
Derek Jeter scored his 1,800th run during the game, which moved him passed Ted Williams for 17th place on the all-time run list.
Hughes gave up a solo shot to right field off the bat of Omar Quintanilla to tie the game at 1.
The Mets took the lead in the 6th inning when David Wright took Hughes deep to center field for a solo shot.
The Yankees were quickly able to get those runs back in the bottom half of the 6th when Mark Teixeira hit a 2-run shot to right field to give them the lead 3-2.
Curtis Granderson would add with a solo shot to increase their lead to 4-2.
Rafael Soriano came on in the 9th inning and notched his 9th save on the season.
The Yankees and Mets will wrap up this series tomorrow.
