The Yankees were able to beat the Mariners on Wednesday 5-2 after a a three run double by Jayson Nix in the eighth inning.
Ivan Nova started for the Yankees and he had his velocity today, but not his command. Nova allowed 2 runs on 2 hits and struck out 5. The issue was his 6 walks that he allowed, which elevated his pitch count early. He kept his team in it and gave them a chance to win.
Derek Jeter cracked the scoring open in the first inning with his solo shot to left field. Jeter, who batted in the No. 2 spot for the first time this season, snapped his homerless streak of 119.
The Mariners would answer right back with two of their own in the first inning.
The Yankees were down one in the eighth and Joe Girardi pinch hit Jayson Nix for Raul Ibanez. The move was worked and Nix lined a three run double into the left field gap which gave the Yankees a 4-2 lead late. Russell Martin would later single home Nix to make it 5-2.
Rafael Soriano came on in the ninth and he shut the door to earn his 26th save of the season.
The Yankees will have an off day tomorrow and begin a three game set with the Red Sox on Friday.
