Curtis Granderson hit is 38th home run in the fifth inning to cut the Rays lead to 3-2. Alex Rodriguez would later hit a two-run shot in the eighth inning to shrink their deficit to 1.
Steve Pearce also drove in a run with his RBI single in the second inning.
The Yankees were unable to rally against Fernando Rodney in the ninth inning as they were retired in order.
The Yankees and Rays will continue their three game set tomorrow afternoon.
