Down 3-0 in the seventh inning, the Yankees were able to put together a two out rally to score three runs and tie the game. Travis Hafner would pinch-hit in the eighth inning and hit a go-ahead home run to give the Yankees a 4-3 lead.
C.C. Sabathia started for the Yankees and what seemed to be a bad outing for the ace, turned into a really good one. Sabathia allowed three runs on six hits in eight innings of work. He struck out six and walked only one batter. Sabathia threw 30 pitches in the first and gave up a two-run shot, which led to speculation
that it would be a shortened start for him. He finished his outing with 108 pitches thrown, in which 77 of them were for strikes.
After struggling in the first six innings of the game, he Yankee offense came to life in the seventh inning. With two outs in the seventh inning and a runner on first base, the Yankee bats suddenly started to work. Brennan Boesch would hit a two-out double to move Ben Francisco to third, who singled with one out in the inning. Eduardo Nunez would work a walk to load the bases. Jayson Nix would walk in a run, which allowed Brett Gardner to hit his game-tying two-run single to left field.
Travis Hafner would be called upon in the eighth inning to pinch-hit and he would come through. On a first pitch fastball, Hafner launched a home run to right-center field to give them a 4-3 lead.
Mariano Rivera would do his part and shut the door to earn his fourth save of the season.
The Yankees and Diamondbacks will conclude their three game set tomorrow night.
