Hughes struggles in loss to Orioles

The Yankees were unable to defeat the Orioles on Saturday as they lost 5-3. Phil Hughes struggled in his second consecutive start as he allowed three home runs.

Phil Hughes allowed five runs on nine hits in three innings of work. He struck out two and did not record a strike out. Hughes was pulled in the fourth inning with a pitch count of 60.

David Phelps came on in relief and did an excellent job. Phelps allowed one hit in four innings of work. He struck out six and did not walk a batter.

Joba Chamberlain and David Robertson each pitched a scoreless inning of work as well.

The Yankee offense did most of their damage in the second inning when they scored two runs. Travis Hafner  led off the inning with a solo shot an Lyle Overbay added with an RBI single.

Vernon Wells was responsible for their third run as he hit a solo shot in the sixth inning.

The Yankees and Orioles will conclude their series tomorrow night.
