C.C. Sabathia didn't have the Opening Day that he would have liked to have. Sabathia allowed four runs on eight hits in five innings of work. He struck out five and walked four. He had a rough second inning, in which he allowed four runs on four hits and two walks.
The deflated Yankee offense was only able to put up two runs, which came off the bat of Francisco Cervelli in the fourth. As a team, they mustered together six hits. They were 2-for-9 with runners in scoring position and stranded eight runners on base.
The Yankee bullpen was getting the job done until the ninth inning when the Red Sox scored three runs off of Joba Chamberlain. David Phelps allowed one run on one hit in one and a third innings of work. He walked two and did not struck out a batter. Both Boone Logan and Shawn Kelly had scoreless outings, as well as Cody Eppley, who relieved Joba Chamberlain in the ninth.
The Yankees will resume their opening series with the Red Sox on Wednesday after an off day tomorrow.
