The Yankees couldn't come up with the win in the opener against the Tigers on Friday as they lost 8-3. Ivan Nova struggled with command all afternoon as most of the batters he faced were put into a full count.

Nova allowed four runs on five hits in four and two-thirds innings of work. He struck out five and walked two. Nova was pulled in the fifth inning with a pitch count of 96. The Yankees had a 3-2 lead.

Boone Logan relieved Nova, but could not retire Prince Fielder. Instead, Fielder hit a three-run homer to right, which gave the Tigers a 5-3 lead. Fielder would hit another home run later in the game to pad their lead.

The Yankee offense did their damage in the fifth inning when they scored three runs. Brett Gardner scored the Yankees first run as he scored on a wild pitch. Kevin Youkilis would add later two more runs when he homered to left-center field.

The Yankees will get right back at it tomorrow when they resume their series with the Tigers.
