The Yankees were able to take the four-game series from the Mariners three games to one as they defeated them 2-1 on Sunday. David Phelps matched Felix Hernandez as he kept the Mariners at bay. Phelps ended up with a no decision, but it was a positive sign for him as he contended with Hernandez.

Phelps allowed one run on three hits in six innings of work. He struck out six, but walked three batters. He concluded his outing with 99 pitches thrown, in which 62 of them were for strikes.

The Yankees got on the board early as Brett Gardner drove in Jayson Nix with a single in the second inning.

With the game tied at one in the ninth inning, Chris Stewart, who is not known for his offense, drove in Ichiro Suzuki to take a 2-1 lead late.

Mariano Rivera came on in the ninth inning and earned save number twenty three of the season.

The Yankees will enjoy an off day tomorrow before beginning a three-game set against the Athletics in Oakland.
