The Yankees were able to avoid the three-game sweep by the Rays on Sunday as they defeated them 6-5. Alfonso Soriano proved to be the hero today as he led the Yankees to the victory with a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth inning. Phil Hughes started for the Yankees today and had another shaky outing.

Hughes allowed five runs on nine hits in four innings of work. He struck out four and walked two. He finished his outing with 92 pitches, in which 59 of them were for strikes.

Alfonso Soriano powered the Yankee offense today as he went four-for-five with three runs batted in.

Mariano Rivera came on in the ninth inning with the ballgame tied and pitched a scoreless inning.

The Yankees will enjoy an off-day tomorrow before beginning a two-game set with the Dodgers on Tuesday.
