The Yankees picked up a win Tuesday night as they defeated the Royals by a score of 3-2. Phil Hughes gave the Yankees a quality start and their offensive improved as they were able to put 3 runs on the board.

Phil Hughes allowed 2 runs on 5 hits in 6 innings pitched. He struck out 7 and walked 2. Hughes threw 106 pitches in which 74 of them were strikes.

The Yankees were trailing 2-0 going into the 4th inning, but Robinson Cano got them on the board with a solo shot into the Yankees Bullpen.

The Yankees would then plate 2 more runs in the bottom half of the 5th inning to take the 3-2 lead over the Royals.

Their offense improved tonight, but it's not quite where they wanted it to be. They were 2-7 with runners in scoring position and they left the bases loaded in the 5th inning. The Yankees also stranded 5 runners on  base.

Rafael Soriano came on to notch the save. Soriano is the new closer since Robertson and Rivera are on the disabled list.

The Yankees and Royals will conclude this 3 game set tomorrow night.

Yanks' Shutout by Royals; Fall to .500

Hiroki Kuroda #18 Of The New York Yankees Walks

The Yankees continued to struggle offensively tonight as the lost to the Royals by a score of 6-0. Their offensive has been slumping over the past week and it showed tonight when they struggled in run scoring situations.

In case you are wondering, here are some stats:

  • The Yankees are 6-for-their-last-72 with runners in scoring position (RISP)
  • They are 23-for-151 (.152 batting average) with runners in scoring position (RISP) in the month of May.

The Yankees were 0-13 tonight with runners in scoring position (RISP)

Hiroki Kuroda was tagged with the start tonight and he picked up the loss. Kuroda allowed 3 runs on 7 hits in 5 1/3 innings pitched. He struck out 4 and walked 3.

It wasn't a quality start for Kuroda, but he kept the Yankees in the game, but their offense couldn't get it done.

The Yankees had the bases loaded in the 3rd inning, but were unable to score. Robinson Cano struck out as well as Alex Rodriguez. Raul Ibanez would then fly out to left field.

The Yankees need to get that spark back in their lineup. An ejection or a big hit could light that spark.

"Our guys are prepared. They are doing their work everyday."Joe Girardi told reporters. "It's just not happening."

On a side note, the Yankees are at the even mark (21-21, .500) on the season. The last time they hit even was on April 18th.

The Yankees and Royals will play the middle game of this 3 game set tomorrow.
