Hughes Dominant in Finale Against Tigers

Phil Hughes and the Yankees took the finale against the Tigers today after Hughes pitched a complete game gem.

Hughes allowed 1 run on 4 hits in his complete game. He struck out 8 and walked 3. Hughes finished with a career high of 123 pitches.

The Yankees offense was able to jump on Verlander quickly. Derek Jeter connected with his 3rd leadoff home run of the season and the 27th of his career. Verlander would allow 1 more run in that inning. He went on to walk Curtis Granderson and Alex Rodriguez. They would move up on a passed ball by the Tigers catcher, Omir Santos. Robinson Cano struck out swinging and then Mark Teixeira hit a sacrifice fly to score Granderson.

In the 3rd inning, Alex Rodriguez hit a towering home run to center field off of Justin Verlander. His home run was estimated to go 447 feet. The ball bounced high off of the brick wall in the stands where retired numbers are.

The Yankees would get 2 more runs in the 5th inning by a RBI triple by Robinson Cano to plate Alex Rodriguez. Robinson Cano would score on a throwing error while attempting to throw him out at 3rd. The ball skipped passed Miguel Cabrera and went into the camera area.

Phil Hughes gave up only 1 run in his outing and that was to Prince Fielder. Fielder hit a long drive to right field on a first pitch breaking ball.

The Yankees finished up their road trip with a 6-3 record. They will enjoy an off day tomorrow and then begin a 6 game home stand.

Yanks' Lose Tough One to Tigers

The Yankees weren't able to pick up a victory Saturday night as the fell to the Tigers 4-3 on a walk off fly ball by Omir Santos. The Yankees struggled offensively throughout the night and could not get the big hit.

Hiroki Kuroda started for the Yankees and he put them in a position to win. Kuroda allowed 2 runs on 7 hits in 7 innings pitched. He struck out 4 and walked 1. Kuroda finished the night with 86 pitches.

The Yankees offense struggled all night. They were 1 for 12 with runners in scoring position and they left 12 men on base.

Raul Ibanez hit a RBI groundout to shortstop to cut their shorten the Tigers lead to 2-1. Nick Swisher would tie the game in the 8th inning with a 2-out single to right field.

The Tigers would answer with a Miguel Cabrera solo shot to center field, his second of the game, to take a 3-2 lead.

Jose Valverde came on to get the save, but quickly worked himself into a jam. He hit Russell Martin with the first pitch he threw. Dewayne Wise would pinch run for Martin and would eventually steal second base. Derek Jeter worked a walk and then Curtis Granderson flew out to center field. Dewayne Wise and Derek Jeter would double steal with Alex Rodriguez at the plate to put them into scoring position. Rodriguez would then get hit by a pitch and the bases were loaded. Robinson Cano was next and he would pop out to shortstop, Jhonny Peralta. Mark Teixeira would tie the game with a bases loaded walk. With the bases loaded, Raul Ibanez would ground out to first base to end the inning. The game was tied at 3.

The Tigers would win the game in the 9th inning after a game winning sac fly to right field by Omir Santos.

Joe Girardi and Kevin Long were both ejected in the 7th inning after a disputed strike call. After a pop up that made it to the seats, home plate umpire Bob Davidson would say something to Kevin Long and Long would have words for him. Davidson would then throw Long out of the game and Girardi stormed out of the dugout. Girardi threw his hat on the ground and he got his money's worth. Girardi would obviously be ejected as well.

The Yankees lost a tough one tonight and they will face the Tigers ace, Justin Verlander, tomorrow.

The Yankees took Game 1 of 3 last night when their ace, C.C. Sabathia picked up his 7th win on the season. Hiroki Kuroda looks to follow his footsteps and pick up a win of his own.

Sabathia, Granderson Lift Yankees Past Tigers

The Yankees took game 1 of this 3 game set Friday night by a final score of 9-4. C.C. picked up his first win of his career in Comerica Park and Curtis Granderson led the offensive surge with a grand slam.

Sabathia allowed 3 runs on 8 hits in 7 innings pitched. He struck out 5 and walked 2. He threw 113 pitches tonight. He increased his record to 7-2 on the season.

Curtis Granderson led the offense with a grand slam in the 2nd inning. Casey Crosby walked 4 guys in the 2nd inning and that led to the grand slam. They would go on to score 5 in the inning. Derek Jeter worked a bases loaded walk to plate a run before the grand slam.

Alex Rodriguez has been searching for his power stroke lately and might have found it with a 2-run shot to left center in the 9th inning. Rodriguez had a tough night at the plate as he struck out 3 times. This was his 8th home run on the season and his 21st run batted in.

The Yankees and Tigers will play game 2 tomorrow night.
