The Yankees defeated the Braves 3-0 Monday night to extend their win streak to 4 straight. The Yankees also moved into a first place tie with the Tampa Bay Rays with the win tonight. The last time the Yankees were in first place was April 24th.

Ivan Nova started for the Yankees and he was outstanding. Nova did not allow a run in his 7 innings of work. He allowed 5 hits, struck out 6, and walked 1. He threw 107 pitches, in which 61 of them were for strikes. He improved his record to 8-2 on the year.

The Yankee offense did their damage early against the Braves start, Randall Delgado. The Yankees scored 1 run in each of the first 3 innings.

Robinson Cano was able to come through with a 2-out RBI single to center field in the top of the 1st to score Alex Rodriguez, which also gave them the early lead.

Raul Ibanez would give the Yankees a 2-0 lead with a solo shot to right field in the 2nd inning. It was his 10th home run on the year.

The third Yankee run came when Randall Delgado threw a wild 3-2 pitch with two outs and the bases loaded. Alex Rodriguez was able to score standing up.

Joe Girardi pulled all the right strings tonight when it came to the bullpen. Girardi used 4 pitchers to get 6 outs. Cody Eppley, Clay Rapada, Corey Wade, and Boone Logan helped secure the Yankee win with their excellent relief appearances.

Instead of calling of Rafael Soriano for the save in the 9th, Girardi mixed and matched to get the victory. He told reporters on the post-game show that Soriano had a little blister on his finger. Soriano said he was fine, but Girardi wanted to give him a day.

The Yankees and Braves will play Game 2 of 3 tomorrow.

Martin's Walk-Off Blast Leads Yankees to Sweep

The Yankees were able to complete the Subway Series sweep against the Mets on a walk-off homerun to left field by Russell Martin, his 2nd of the game. Martin had previously hit a a 2-run shot to right field to cut the Mets' lead to 3-2.

Andy Pettitte was on the mound today against Jon Niese of the Mets'. Pettitte allowed 3 runs, 2 earned, on 5 hits in 6 innings pitched. He struck out 8 batters and walked 2. He finished with 95 pitches, in which 60 of them were for strikes.

Pettitte might have gone a little longer, but he barehanded a hard comebacker to the mound. Pettitte would throw on to first to get the out, but by the sound of the ball hitting his hand, you knew it hurt. Joe Girardi and the trainer came out to check on him, but fortunately Pettitte was OK. He would go on to finish the inning, but would not return for the 7th inning as he was relieved by Clay Rapada.

After the game, Pettitte told reporters that his hand immediately swelled up and he was lucky that he was able to get out of the 6th inning. He also said that he had a hard time getting a feel for the ball during the 6th. X-rays were taken on his left hand and came back negative. He is expected to make his next start.

The Yankee offense was quiet until the late innings. They kept getting the lead-off batter on, but that batter would be stranded or would be erased on a double play ball. The Yankees grounded into 4 double plays throughout the game.

The Yankees offense started to come alive in the 7th inning. After an error by David Wright that allowed Andruw Jones to reach, Russell Martin hit a lazer to right field for a 2-run shot. The Yankees were trailing 3-0 before the home-run. The Mets lead would shrink to 3-2.

The Yankees would take the lead in the 8th inning after 4 consecutive singles by Jeter, Granderson, Teixeira, and Rodriguez to plate 2 runs to give them the 4-3 lead. Robinson Cano, Nick Swisher, and pinch hitter Raul Ibanez would all be retired in order.

Rafael Soriano came on in the 9th, but gave up back-to-back doubles by Lucas Duda and Ike Davis, and the Mets would tie the score. The Yankees would get out of the inning without surrendering the lead. This was Rafael Soriano's for blown save as the Yankees closer this year. Boone Logan came on and escaped the 1st and 3rd jam with only one out to keep the game tied.

Russell Martin led off the 9th inning with a solo shot down the left field line to secure the sweep. It was his 2nd home run of the game.

The Yankees are 3-0 against the Mets this year and the next time they meet will be June 22nd through June 24th at Citi Field.

The Yankees will travel to Atlanta to begin a 3 game set with the Braves.
