Yankees HOPE Week: An Angel in Queens

The Yankees visited An Angel in Queens to celebrate Hope Week on Tuesday. Robinson Cano, Curtis Granderson, Hiroki Kuroda, and Boone Logan were the players that visited.

An Angel in Queens is a nonprofit organization started by Jorge Munoz that helps bring hot meals to the less fortunate. Every night at around 9:30 pm Jorge arrives at the intersection from his home in Woodhaven, driving his white pickup truck with enough home cooked meals to feed the dozens of day laborers who congregate there.

The Yankees donated rice and they helped Munoz cook. They also donated him $10,000 towards his organization.

Munoz cooks for over 100 people every day. He lost his job as a bus driver, but he still strides to feed people with the little money that he has.

"I feel great great when i see these guys with their smiling faces," Munoz said. "Because they got something to eat before they go to sleep."

Yankees HOPE Week: Flying Manes

The Yankees kicked off hope week yesterday with a visit to the Flying Manes, a nonprofit organization that helps children with physical and emotional disabilities by offering therapeutic horse riding instruction. It was started by Stefanie Dwyer and her husband Bricklin about four years ago.

Mark Teixeira, Eric Chavez, Jayson Nix, pitching coach Larry Rothschild, and Yankees general partner Jennifer Steinbrenner Swindell all attended the event.

The Yankees surprised the children by bringing the horses down to an enclosed area. The players interacted with them and shared many laughs throughout the day.

Mark Teixeira spent time with 9 year old Owen Atkins, who is suffering from cerebral palsy. Teixeira guided Atkins horse while he sat on the saddle.

It's great. This is wonderful. Owen in a huge Yankees fan," Dan said. "You just cannot put this into words. He's extremely excited. We watch a lot of Yankee games on TV. This is something that he will have for his whole life and it is really inspiring."

Mark Teixeira played a game with Owen. Teixeira held a ball and and Owen took his best swing and hit it.

"We really enjoy being with our fans and being with the community," Teixeira said. "Anytime you can put a smile on a kids face, it makes it all worth it."

Happy Birthday, Derek Jeter

Arguably one of the greatest players to put on a Yankee uniform celebrates his birthday today.

Derek Jeter turned 38 today, but on the field he looks like hes 25 again.

Jeter has started 2012 off at an unbelievable pace. He had 37 hits in 95 at bats with a .389 average in April. It was one of his best starts to a season in his career.

Derek seemed to take off after he recovered from his hamstring injury back in 2011. He went down to Tampa and adjusted his stance and every since he's been hitting a hot bat.

Jeter would collect his 3,000th hit in grand style with a home run to left field off of David Price.

Derek Jeter is one of those players that you rarely see come around.

Happy birthday, Derek.
