Yankees HOPE Week: Andy Fass

The Yankees honored Andy Fass on Wednesday as part of HOPE Week. Andy is a five-year old boy who is suffering from oculocutaneous albinism, a disease that affects around 40,000 people around the world. Andy is legally blind and cannot be in the sun for long hours due to loss of pigment in his skin. Fass always wanted to play tee-ball, but is unable to due to his condition.

Yankee players Derek Jeter, C.C. Sabathia, Andy Pettitte, Phil Hughes, Russell Martin, Clay Rapada, and Chris Stewart will all surprise Andy Fass and play a game of tee-ball with him. Coaches Rob Thompson and Mick Kelleher will also be attending.

The Fass family will be greeted at approximately 11:00 pm at Yankee Stadium and they will be greeted by Yankee players and family members that will announce a postgame party at the MLB Fan Cave. The Yankees will surprise Andy with a special tee-ball lesson and other games with children who suffer from the same disease as Andy.

The New York Yankees HOPE Week will last until Friday, June 29th.

C.C. Sabathia Placed on Disabled List

C.C. Sabathia has be placed on the disabled list on Wednesday with a Grade 1 groin strain. He will likely miss two starts and the Yankees have said that he will return after the All-Star break.

Sabathia strained his groin during the fourth inning of his start against the Mets. He told the team after throwing his bullpen yesterday.

The Yankees have not announced who they will be calling up, but Adam Warren is in the mix.

Freddy Garcia will be taking his spot in the rotation.

DeWayne Wise Disputed Catch - Follow Up

Before i start, here is the play if you haven't seen it. In case you haven't seen the play, then here it is.

DeWayne Wise was in the middle of a disputed call during Tuesday night's game.

Wise was tracking down a line drive off the bat of Jack Hannahan when he dove into the stands in left field. Third base umpire Mike DiMuro called Hannahan out right away, even though he didn't even check to see if Wise had possession of the ball.

Wise ran off the field without arguing the call.

He was asked about the call after the game.

"What am i supposed to do? Run back to left field?" Wise told reporters. "I just ran off the field."

Mike Dimuro, the third base umpire who made the call, had this to say about the play.

"Now that i see the tape, it's obvious that the ball fell out of his glove," Dimuro said. "I should have asked him to show me the ball. "

Jack Hannahan was ejected in the eighth inning after arguing the call when he came out to take the field. Jose Lopez replaced him and would hit a 3-run shot to left field in the ninth inning.

Mike Dimuro was asked why he ejected Jack Hannahan and he told reporters that Jack told him to "reference the tape replay."

In my opinion,that is not an excuse to eject a player.

It will be interesting to see what the players around the league think about this.

Hughes Impressive in Yanks' Victory over Indians

Phil Hughes pitches against the Cleveland Indians Tuesday night. 

The Yankees extended their winning streak to four consecutive games with their 6-4 win over the Indians Tuesday night. Phil Hughes was lights out tonight and the Yankee offense was able to get the job done. 

Phil Hughes pitched 8 innings of shutout ball. He allowed 6 hits and struck out 4. He walked 1 batter. Hughes threw 111 pitches, 74 of them were for strikes. 

Hughes had a rough start against the Braves his last time out. He allowed 5 runs on 6 hits. He also allowed 4 home runs.

This outing he didn't allow a run or a home run. He had good command of his fastball and his breaking ball was outstanding. Although he didn't have many strikeouts, he was getting ahead of batters which led to quick outs. 

The Yankee offense continued to get the job done tonight. They scored three in the third on a Chris Stewart RBI single and a Curtis Granderson 2-run single. 

Mark Teixeira would hit a sacrifice fly to center field in the fifth inning to drive in Curtis Granderson to make it 4-0. 

Alex Rodriguez would add to their lead with a solo shot to left field in the seventh inning. With that hit, he passed Ivan Rodriguez for 45th place on the all-time hits list. 

The Yankees would add one more run by a Chris Stewart sacrifice fly to left field to score Nick Swisher in the eighth inning. 

Cory Wade would come on in the ninth to relive Phil Hughes and he was unable to close the game out. Wade allowed 3 runs on 4 hits.

Rafael Soriano would replace Wade and he would notch his 16th save of the season. 

The Yankees will conclude their 3 game set with the Indians tomorrow.
