The Yankees were unable to defeat the Athletics on Thursday night as they were defeated 4-3. Robinson Cano extended his hitting streak to 23 games and the team extended their streak to 43 of scoring 3 or more runs.

Freddy Garcia started for the Yankees and he struggled. Garcia allowed 4 runs on 9 hits in 5 2/3 innings pitched. He struck out 6 and walked 2. He finished his outing with 105 pitches, in which 68 of them were for strikes.

The Yankees got on the board in the sixth inning when they scored two runs by a Mark Teixeira sacrifice fly and a Nick Swisher RBI single. Swisher would later hit a home run in the ninth inning.

The Yankees fell just short of a victory tonight. These two teams will battle it out once again on Friday.

David Phelps Called Up: Mitchell Optioned

The Yankees have called up right-hander David Phelps to provide long relief to their bullpen. Phelps may also come in for situational pitching, like getting out of a jam.

Since Phelps was called up, the Yankees had to option D.J. Mitchell to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

David Phelps has been impressive in the minor leagues and it was just a matter of time until the Yankees called him back up.

Brett Gardner to Have Surgery; May Be Done for Season

The Yankees have announced that outfielder Brett Gardner will undergo arthroscopic surgery next week. There has been no information if he will return this season, but his agent stated that he could return this season.

The procedure will be done by Dr. Ahmad, the team doctor. They will remove inflamed tissue in his right elbow.

Gardner has played only 9 games this season. He suffered the injury in the middle of April by diving for a ball in left field. He tried to rehab the injury, but kept experiencing setbacks.

The Yankees may pursue a corner outfielder as the trade deadline approaches.
