The Yankees were unable to take the opener from the Blue Jays on Monday as they were defeated 8-7 after Rafael Soriano blew his third save of the season.

David Phelps started for the Yankees and he pitched decent. Phelps allowed 4 runs on 5 hits in 6 1/3 innings of work. He struck out 7 and waked only 1 batter. Phelps exited with 88 pitches thrown, in which 60 of them were for strikes. David made only two mistakes tonight, which resulted in home runs.

The Yankee offense was led by Robinson Cano and Nick Swisher. Cano belted two home runs tonight, while Swisher launched a two-run shot to left field.

Mark Teixeira exited the game in the fifth inning after straining his calf on his swing.

Rafael Soriano came on in the ninth inning and allowed a go-ahead three run home run to Colby Rasmus, which at the time gave the Blue Jays a 7-6 lead over the Yankees.

Derek Jeter tied the game in the ninth inning after he led off with a solo shot to right field.

The Blue Jays were able to take the lead in the eleventh inning on an RBI groundout by Adeint Hechavarria. The Yankees were unable to answer back as Nick Swisher struck out to end the game on a controversial call.

The Yankees and Blue Jays will play game two of three tomorrow.

Yankees Acquire Steve Pearce From Astros

The Yankees were able to acquire outfielder/first baseman Steve Pearce from the Astros for cash considerations.

Pearce, who was with the Yankees minor league system to start the season, returned to his former club. Pearce was released by the Yankees after not being called up by a certain date.
