Yankee Updates: Phil Hughes and Derek Jeter

There has been some noise down at the Yankees training complex down in Tampa, Florida. Phil Hughes and Derek Jeter were both active today as they try to rehab from their injuries and return to the major leagues.

Adam Berry of mlb.com has reported that Phil Hughes pitched seven innings in an extended spring training start at the Yankees minor league complex. With his successful outing today, Hughes will pitch for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Saturday, which will likely be his last rehab appearance  Hughes is looking to make his Yankee season debut on April 11th.

Derek Jeter did some small work today as he had a catch for about eight minutes. The Yankees are taking his rehab very slowly ever since he felt soreness in his left ankle. Jeter is eligible to return on April 6th, but it appears as if he will need more time.

Yankees release Juan Rivera

Juan Rivera has confirmed that he has indeed been released by the Yankees during their game against the Pirates on Friday.

Rivera, who was signed to a minor league deal, batted .305 (18-for-59) with five doubles and five RBI's this spring. With his good showing during the spring, Rivera thought he had done enough to make the team.

"This is the New York Yankees," Rivera said. "You never know."

The Yankees will break camp with Ben Francisco, who they signed on March 11th, and Lyle Overbay. Overbay was signed by the Yankees on Tuesday after he was released by the Red Sox.

Phil Hughes will start season on disabled list

Phil Hughes will be placed on the 15-day disabled list to start the season so he can can continue pitching in extended spring camp, the team announced.

Hughes has been dealing with a bulging disk in his upper back that halted his spring training and kept him out of action. He will be eligible to return to the Yankees rotation on April 6th, but the team thinks that April 11th will be more realistic for Hughes.

Ivan Nova and David Phelps are set to join the rotation along with C.C. Sabathia, Hiroki Kuroda, and Andy Pettitte.
