The Yankees were able to avoid a sweep on Sunday as they defeated the Tigers 7-0. Behind Sabathia, the Yankees were able to take the lead early against Verlander and the Tigers. From there on, they would not look back.

Sabathia allowed no runs on four hits in seven innings of work. He struck out four and walked three. Sabathia finished his day with 114 pitches thrown, in which 68 of them were for strikes. With his win today, he evened his record to 1-1 and lowered his ERA down to 3.00.

The Yankee offense went to work today against Verlander and the Tigers as they scored seven runs on thirteen hits.

The Yankees were able to score three runs in the third, which was highlighted by a two-run shot from Jayson Nix. They would go on to add two more runs in the eighth and two more in the ninth to increase their lead to 7-0.

Mariano Rivera would come into the game in the ninth to close the game out. Although it was not a safe opportunity, this is the last time Mariano Rivera will pitch at Comerica Park in a regular season game. During his outing, he allowed zero runs on two hits. He struck out one and did not issue a walk.

The Yankees were on the losing side again on Saturday as they lost to the Tigers 8-4. Their pitching struggles continued as they allowed 17 hits during the game.

Phil Hughes started for the Yankees and he allowed three earned runs on eight hits in four innings of work. He struck out four and did not walk a batter. Hughes was pitching well until the fifth inning when he allowed two runs and was removed from the game.

Boone Logan, David Phelps, and Joba Chamberlain combined to allow nine hits and four runs.

The Yankee offense came early as Vernon Wells started the Yankees scoring in the second with his solo shot to left field.

After being down 5-1 in the 6th, the Yankees rallied which brought them within one. Travis Hafner and Lyle Overbay both drove in runs.

The Tigers would storm back in the 6th though and put up a two spot. They would tack on an extra run in the eighth as well.

The Yankees will try to get back in the win column on Sunday when they conclude their three game set against the Tigers.
