Kevin Youkilis exits game due to lower back stiffness

Kevin Youkilis was removed from Saturday's game against the Toronto Blue Jays due to lower back stiffness. Youkilis did not come out to first base for the bottom half of the sixth inning.

Youkilis lined a two-run single to left field in the top of the fifth inning, and there were no signs of any pain or discomfort.

With another game tomorrow afternoon on the turf at Rogers Centre, it is likely that Youkilis will be given the day off. Let it be said that once they leave Toronto, the team will travel to Tampa Bay to play three more games on a turf field.

Kevin Youkilis dealt with some back problems last year and appeared in 122 games for the Red Sox and White Sox.

The Yankees were able to defeat the Blue Jays 9-4 after Andy Pettitte made his return and picked up the win. Pettitte, who has been sidelined for about a week with back spasms, picked up his third win of this young season and number 248 of his career.

Andy Pettitte allowed three runs on six hits in seven and a third innings of work. He struck out five and walked only one. He finished his outing after throwing 90 pitches, in which 61 of them were for strikes.

The Yankee offense got off to a quick start as they scored two runs in the first inning. Travis Hafner doubled in a run and Vernon Wells drove in Kevin Youkilis with an RBI groundout.

The Yankees would tack on three more runs in the third inning. Travis Hafner hit his fifth home run on the year, a solo shot to left field, to increase their lead to 3-1. Eduardo Nunez would fly out to center field but two runs would score on a throwing error by Colby Rasmus.

Lyle Overbay hit a solo shot to center field with one out in the sixth to make it a 6-1 lead. Francisco Cervelli would follow up with a ground-rule double and would score on Brett Gardner's triple one batter later. This was the second inning in the game where they put up a three spot.

Vernon Wells also contributed with a solo shot in the seventh inning, which made it a 9-3 lead.

The Yankee bullpen was given a rest tonight. Shawn Kelley finished the ballgame as threw an inning and two thirds. He allowed one run on one hit. The only hit he gave up was a solo shot to J.P. Arencibia.

The Yankees and Blue Jays will continue their three game set tomorrow afternoon.
