With two outs and the game tied at two in the bottom of the ninth, pinch-hitter Brennan Boesch beat out a groundball to third base to give the Yankees a 3-2 lead. Mariano Rivera pitched the ninth inning to seal the one run victory in Colorado. David Phelps started for the Yankees and he was outstanding
Phelps allowed two runs on three hits in six innings of work. He struck out four and walked one. Phelps made one mistake, which was a fastball in the middle of the plate to Todd Helton, who hit it out for a two-run shot. He finished his second outing as a starter with 84 pitches thrown, in which 48 of them were for strikes.
Vernon Wells gave the Yankees a boost offensively as he went 3-for-4 with a home run and two runs batted in.
The Yankee bullpen was outstanding tonight. Preston Claiborne, David Robertson, and Mariano Rivera shut the Rockies down offensively. Combined, they allowed one run in three innings of relief work.
The Yankees and Rockies will conclude their three game set tomorrow afternoon.
