After struggling to start the season, Phil Hughes looks to be back on track with his strong showing today. The Yankees were able to defeat the Athletics 4-2 after receiving an impressive start from Phil Hughes. Hughes came into this game 0-2 with a 4.67 ERA, but finished with a 1-2 record with a 3.60 ERA.

Hughes allowed no runs on four hits in eight innings of work. He struck out nine and walked two. He finished his outing with 118 pitches thrown, in which 82 of them were for strikes. Hughes was ahead of mostly every hitter and was also keeping them off balance.

The Yankee offense used the home run ball to their advantage today as Chris Stewart launched a solo shot in the second inning. Lyle Overbay would follow in the fifth inning with a solo shot of his own.

Brett Gardner and Travis Hafner both contributed offensively with RBI singles.

Shawn Kelley and Mariano Rivera pitched the ninth inning and they each allowed a run.

The Yankees and Athletics will play the final game of their three game set tomorrow afternoon.
