The Yankees were defeat the Athletics on Sunday as they were defeated 5-4 in a hard-fought game. The Yankees were never able to take the lead in this game as it was always tied or they were trailing. In the bottom of the ninth inning, they had a chance to tie it with runners on first and second, but Vernon Wells struck out to end the game.
Andy Pettitte started for the Yankees and his struggles continued. Pettitte allowed four runs, three of them earned, on four hits in five innings of work. He struck out two, but walked four. Pettitte struggled with command, but seemed to make a pitch when it mattered. He finished his outing with 100 pitches thrown, in which 57 of them were for strikes.
With the score 4-2 in the sixth, Lyle Overbay blooped a single to center field to tie the game at four.
The Yankees allowed the Athletics to take the lead in the eighth inning when Boone Logan allowed a game-winning solo shot off the bat of Josh Donaldson.
The Yankees concluded their ten game homestand with a 7-3 record and will travel to Colorado to take on the Rockies on Tuesday.
