The Yankees were able to snap their three game losing streak on Wednesday as they defeated the Rays 6-4.   With their win tonight, the Yankees have regained sole possession of first place in the American League East.

Hiroki Kuroda started for the Yankees and he picked up the win. Kuroda allowed 4 runs on 8 hits in 6 innings of work. He struck out 3 and walked 2. Kuroda finished his outing with 101 pitches thrown, in which 61 of them were for strikes.

The Yankee offense was led by Russell Martin, who drove in three runs. Martin doubled in a pair in the fourth inning and launched a solo shot in the sixth inning.

Derek Jeter picked up three hits in five at-bats tonight and raised his average from .316 to .319.

The Yankee bullpen was outstanding tonight as they worked three scoreless innings.

Rafael Soriano was able to notch his 36th save of the season as he shut the door to seal the win.

The Yankees will begin a four game set with the Orioles tomorrow night.

The Yankees were unable to defeat the Rays Tuesday night as they were defeated 5-2. With their loss, the Yankees have lost sole possession of first place in the American League East, as they are now tied with the Baltimore Orioles.

Freddy Garcia started for the Yankees and he struggled with command. Garcia allowed 5 runs on 5 hits in 5 1/3 innings of work. He struck out 5, but walked 4. Garcia threw 101 pitches, in which 62 of them were for strikes.

Robinson Cano was the source of the Yankee offense as his two-run shot in the first inning accounted for their only two runs of the game.

The Yankees and Rays will wrap up their three game set tomorrow night.


Updates: Nova, Pettitte, Teixeira

Joe Girardi and some Yankee players have released some information about their on-going injuries.


  • Ivan Nova threw around 20 pitches today in his simulated game today. Nova will likely be back with the team once his stint on the disabled list is up. The team will check in with Nova tomorrow to see how his arm feels. 
  • Andy Pettitte will throw against live hitters tomorrow for the first time. 
  • Both Nova and Pettitte will likely get their work in through simulated games and will not pitch in the minor leagues. 
  • Mark Teixeira has been jogging on his injured left calf and said a return this Thursday is possible, but unlikely. Teixeira made it clear that a weekend return in more likely.
