Phil Hughes to be activated from disabled list

Phil Hughes will be activated from the 15-day disabled list on Saturday, General Manager Brian Cashman confirmed. Hughes, who has been sidelined with a bulging disk in his back, will make his season debut against the Tigers.

Hughes was scheduled to make his final rehabilitation start for Triple-A Scranton/Wikes-Barre, but with the Yankees recent struggles with their starting pitchers, he will be given the ball for the big league club.

Hughes did not make a spring training start for the Yankees, however, he pitched in many minor league games.

Cody Eppley has been sent down to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in order to make room for Phil Hughes

David Phelps was scheduled to start on Saturday, but he has been slotted into the long relief role.

The Yankees couldn't come up with the win in the opener against the Tigers on Friday as they lost 8-3. Ivan Nova struggled with command all afternoon as most of the batters he faced were put into a full count.

Nova allowed four runs on five hits in four and two-thirds innings of work. He struck out five and walked two. Nova was pulled in the fifth inning with a pitch count of 96. The Yankees had a 3-2 lead.

Boone Logan relieved Nova, but could not retire Prince Fielder. Instead, Fielder hit a three-run homer to right, which gave the Tigers a 5-3 lead. Fielder would hit another home run later in the game to pad their lead.

The Yankee offense did their damage in the fifth inning when they scored three runs. Brett Gardner scored the Yankees first run as he scored on a wild pitch. Kevin Youkilis would add later two more runs when he homered to left-center field.

The Yankees will get right back at it tomorrow when they resume their series with the Tigers.

Eduardo Nunez leaves game with bruised biceps

The Yankees have another injury to deal with today as Eduardo Nunez bruised his biceps after being hit by a pitch during today's game.

Nunez, who is listed day-to-day, was plunked in the fourth inning in the opening game of their three game set with the Tigers. The ball hit Nunez's right forearm and he immediately withered in pain.

Nunez left the game and underwent X-rays, which came back negative.

Jayson Nix pinch ran for Eduardo Nunez and would finish his day by going 0-for-2 with one strikeout.
