Yankee Updates: Chamberlain, Robertson, Nelson

The Yankees have made some moves in the last couple of days that have affected their roster.

  • Joba Chamberlain has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with a oblique strain. Chamberlain suffered the injury while warming up in the bullpen. Chamberlain will likely come off when he is elgibile as he has a history of recovering fast.
  • David Robertson has some discomfort in his left knee and will be out all three games against the Athletics.
  • The Yankees have acquired infielder Chris Nelson from the Rockies for cash or a player to be named later.
  • Preston Claiborne has been called up from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to replace Joba Chamberlain.
  • Cody Eppley has been designated for assignment to make room for Claiborne on the 40-man roster.

The Yankees also noted that Curtis Granderson will be returning in the middle of May while Mark Teixeira aims at the end of May or early June.

The Yankees were able to defeat the Astros on Wednesday by a final score of 5-4. David Phelps replaced Ivan Nova in the rotation tonight and he pitched a decent game. He ran into trouble in the fourth inning when he allowed four runs, which tied the game.

Phelps allowed four runs on eight hits in five and two thirds innings of work. He struck out five and walked one. He finished his night with 87 pitches thrown, in which 58 of them were for strikes.

The Yankees got off to a good start as they scored four runs in the first three innings. Ichiro Suzuki led off the game with a triple and he would later score on an RBI single by Jayson Nix.

In the third inning, Robinson Cano and Ben Francisco would each hit solo home runs.

Eduardo Nunez would score the go-ahead run in the sixth inning on a double play by Ichiro Suzuki. With Lyle Overbay on first base, Ichiro hit a slow groundball to second base. Overbay evades the tag and gets into a run down, which allows Nunez to score. Overbay would eventually get tagged out at second, but with his heads up play, the Yankees were able to take the lead.

Mariano Rivera came on in the ninth inning and shut the door to pick up his eleventh save in eleven opportunities.

The Yankees will enjoy an off day tomorrow and will begin a three game set with the Althletics on Friday.
