Andy Pettitte placed on disabled list

The Yankees have announced that they have placed left-hander Andy Pettitte on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left trapezius muscle.

After striking out two consecutive batters in the fifth inning, Pettitte was removed from the game. Pettitte said after the game that his back locked up during the inning and that he was unable to continue.

The Yankees have recalled Vidal Nuno from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes Barre and he will take Pettitte's spot in the rotation.

Andy Petitte is expected to resume his season as soon as his stint is over on the disabled list.

The Yankees were unable to take the series against the Mariners as they were defeated 3-2 on Thursday night. Andy Pettitte, the Yankees starter, exited in the fifth inning with upper back stiffness and is day-to-day. Chris Stewart also left the game in the eighth inning with a groin injury.

Pettitte allowed two runs on four hits in four and two thirds innings of work. He struck out five but walked three. He exited his injury shortened start with 79 pitches, in which 48 of them were for strikes.

David Adams got the Yankees on the board in the second inning with a RBI double, which was his first RBI of his career  that scored Curtis Granderson. The Yankees would collect one more run in the seventh inning on an infield single by Robinson Cano that scored Ichiro Suzuki.

With the tying run at third base with two outs in the ninth inning, Robinson Cano grounded out to shortstop to end the Yankees bid to tie the game.

The Yankees will begin a three-game series with the Blue Jays tomorrow.

Tonight was a start that Phil Hughes does not want to remember as he couldn't even escape the first inning in the 12-2 blowout by the Mariners. He retired the leadoff batter on just two pitches, but it then took him 32 pitches to record the second out in the inning. Hughes gave up seven runs in the first inning before being pulled by manager Joe Girardi.

Hughes allowed seven runs on six hits in two thirds of an inning pitched. He issued two walks and did not record a strikeout. He threw 36 pitches, in which 23 of them were for strikes. The big blow in the inning was the grand slam by former Yankee, Raul Ibanez.

Preston Claiborne and Brett Marshall both pitched in relief tonight. Marshall allowed five runs and threw 108 pitches out of the bullpen.

Infielder Alberto Gonzalez pitched the ninth inning and recorded the final out in an effort to preserve a pitcher out of the bullpen.

Vernon Wells and Chris Stewart accounted for the Yankees only runs tonight as they both hit solo shots.

The Yankees and Mariners will conclude their three game series tomorrow night.
