The Yankees were unable to increase their win streak to three on Tuesday as they were defeated 6-4 in the opener against the Athletics. The Yankee offense was silent for most of the game until they started to rally late, but it wasn't enough. C.C. Sabathia had a poor outing and suffered his fifth loss of the season.
Sabathia allowed six runs on eight hits in six innings of work. He struck out three and walked one. He finished his outing with 97 pitches thrown in which 63 of them were thrown for strikes.
With the score 6-0 in the eighth inning, the Yankees finally got on the board as Mark Teixeira singled in Brett Gardner to make it a 6-1 game. Vernon Wells would drive in Robinson Cano with a single later in the eighth inning.
The Yankees would go on to collect two more runs in the ninth inning on a Mark Teixeira two-run single.
The Yankees and Athletics will continue their three-game set tomorrow night.
